FamilyTree Privacy Policy

Last updated: 17 August 2026

FamilyTree (com.familytrees.app) is an offline family tree application for Android devices.

In short

FamilyTree does not collect any personal data. Any information you enter into the app remains on your device unless you choose to export or share it yourself.

You do not need to create an account or sign in to a server to use the app. FamilyTree does not use analytics, tracking, or crash-reporting services.

What data does the app store?

Everything you enter into FamilyTree — including people, family relationships, dates, places, events, notes, sources, and attached photos — is stored in the app's private storage on your device.

Photos and other media files you attach are read from, or copied into, folders on your device.

Only you and apps that you have explicitly granted access to can access this storage. Uninstalling FamilyTree removes the app's stored data from your device.

Your data leaves your device only when you choose to move or share it. This can happen when you:

  • Export a GEDCOM (.ged) file.

  • Create a ZIP backup and share or copy it.

  • Share your family tree with another person as a file.

In each case, you choose where the file is saved or sent. FamilyTree uses Android's own file picker and sharing interface to complete these actions. The app does not upload your data to its own servers.

Internet access

FamilyTree declares the INTERNET permission because Google Play Billing, which is used for the optional in-app purchase, requires an internet connection to communicate with Google Play.

FamilyTree does not use the internet to transmit, back up, or synchronize your family tree data.

If an imported family tree contains a photo that is referenced by a web address rather than a local file, FamilyTree does not download the photo. The web address is displayed only as a link.

Permissions

FamilyTree uses the following Android permissions:

  • INTERNET and ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Required by Google Play Billing for the optional in-app purchase.

  • POST_NOTIFICATIONS: Used for birthday reminders generated locally on your device. This permission is optional, and denying it does not affect the rest of the app.

  • com.android.vending.BILLING: Used for the optional in-app purchase.

  • RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED, WAKE_LOCK, and FOREGROUND_SERVICE: Used by Android WorkManager to reschedule local birthday reminders after the device is restarted.

Access to photos and files is requested only when you choose a file through Android's built-in document picker. The app can access only the files you select.

Purchases

The optional premium purchase is processed by Google Play.

FamilyTree does not see or store your payment information. The app only records whether the premium purchase is currently active.

The purchase transaction and any data processed as part of it are governed by Google's own privacy policies and terms.

Children

FamilyTree is not directed at children and does not collect data from users of any age.

Backups

If Android's system backup feature is enabled on your device, Android may include FamilyTree's app data in your device backup.

This is a platform feature controlled by Android and Google, subject to Google's terms and your device settings. It is outside the direct control of FamilyTree.

You can disable system backups through your device's backup settings.
